A presentation at the Chicago ProMat 2023 show by the Rack Manufacturers Institute has highlighted the many complex factors that need to be considered when designing a new warehouse rack system. These factors include how products are stored and how forklifts, people and automated systems interact with the racks.
Designing a new rack system plan starts with a conversation with a warehouse rack supplier to determine the right racks for the type of products stored. For instance, furniture requires different storage and handling requirements than garments. The weight of items stored affects how strong the racks need to be.
Racks are not isolated areas of a warehouse; they interact with people and material coming into contact with equipment. This means that safety features are a high priority, which includes guard posts, protectors, guard rails and wire mesh screens.
One of the top issues with racks is damage caused by lift trucks or forklifts. Thick rubber bumpers may minimize damage, but no rack protection is 100% effective, which is why regular rack inspections need to be part of a rack storage plan.
Every rack system needs to take into account both safety and operational considerations. If a warehouse does not employ a person that is an expert in storage rack design, it is recommended to consult a warehouse rack manufacturer.
Finally, the rack system should be designed with flexibility in mind to be able to expand to meet the needs of business growth in five or ten years.
