Seven considerations when relocating to a new warehouse

For several companies, the growth in online sales during the pandemic has meant relocating their warehouse to larger premises to store more inventory. Moving to a new warehouse can be daunting and stressful, but certain considerations can make it easier.

1. Consider the future

If a warehouse move is due to an increase in orders, it helps to consider future growth. The new warehouse may be adequate for present or near future sales, but what happens if orders increase significantly next month or next year? Plan for future storage needs by making sure that the new warehouse has plenty of spare storage capacity or room to add more shelving.

2. Be realistic about man hours

Most companies need to continue to process orders while the warehouse move is happening. This requires a realistic estimate of the number of manhours it requires to carry out both operations. If necessary, employ temporary staff until the move is complete.

3. Plan the space

A move to a new warehouse is the ideal time to look at how to maximise the use of space. Analyse the workflow to pick and pack items and optimize for efficiency.

4. Reduce inventory if necessary

This is a good time to look at inventory levels. Are you carrying too many of some items? Any obsolete stock should be disposed of or sold to bulk buyers at a discount.

5. Remember security and safety

When moving and unpacking goods, there is a theft risk, and if staff are not careful, they risk injury. Assign staff members to be responsible for safety and security who will check everything coming in or out of the warehouse

Staff also need to be careful of breakages and inventory damage, particularly when loading palletised items onto racks.

6. Create a timeline

Detailed planning is vital when relocating to a new warehouse. Put together at least a six-month timeline that details when and where each operation should happen, from hiring an architect and general contractor to ordering new equipment and when IT systems will be installed.

7. Reuse or new?

Decide on how much of the existing racking and shelving can be reused in the new facility, or do you want a completely new storage system? Is it necessary to plan to buy new picking trolleys, packing tables and other warehouse equipment?

At Steely Products, we will advise you on all your equipment needs. We’ll look at your existing equipment and recommend whether to keep items or invest in new equipment. If new gear increases productivity, it’s well worth the expense.
