Warehouse operators often struggle to retain staff and while automation is one way to tackle this issue, gamification strategies is another suggested solution. Matt Gregory, Senior Vice President of Voice & Mobility at Infios, recommends adding gamification strategies as another solution that does not involve substantial investment in automated systems.
Gamification adds elements found in games such as competition, point scoring, prizes and playing rules, to jobs in order to encourage engagement. It adds stimulation that keeps employees interested in their work. Competition and challenges encourage staff to increase the number of items picked and decrease errors.
There is evidence that gamification works. A report by Gallup in 2024 showed that gamification tactics reduce absenteeism by 81% and staff turnover by between 18% to 43%. Despite this evidence, many warehouses have no gamification policies.
Matt Gregory says that gamification needs to be carefully implemented in warehouses. Too much competition or unrealistic competitive targets can cause unintended stress for some employees. As an example, if order pickers run with aisle picking trolleys when competing for a prize for the most orders picked in a day, then safety can be compromised. He says:
“When implemented correctly, gamification can reinvigorate the warehouse environment, empowering employees to shape how they interact with the workplace.”
Gregory predicts that gamification will have a major role in addressing the hiring and retention challenges in warehouses. It will help employees to see their employment in the company as being a long term career that they value.
