The Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) has enhanced its Materials Handling Instructor Course, undergoing a comprehensive update to enable instructors to improve safety standards.
Recent advancements in material handling technology have impacted the updated curriculum. While conventional materials handling equipment like aisle picking trolleys and forklifts are prevalent in the industry, employees frequently operate in the same areas as automated machinery, posing unique safety hazards.
The course is conducted through a blended learning approach, combining online modules that allow participants to progress at their own pace with in-person instructional sessions. Upon finishing the course, participants undergo evaluations, including a practical assessment and a comprehensive knowledge test. Successful candidates are then classified as pass, merit, or distinction.
Laura Nelson, managing director of RTITB hopes that the course will improve the behaviour of instructors and encourage them to learn and develop. She said:
“We wanted to deliver a new training syllabus and examination that gives companies the reassurance that if they have an RTITB Instructor, they will comply with legislation and be training safer, more efficient operators within the workforce.”
She sees the course as a key step to improve standards within the transport industry, by training instructors with the necessary skills and knowledge to make material handling safer. The RTITB aims to assure companies that they are making a sound business choice by hiring instructors trained by RTITB.
The upcoming course is set to launch on June 3, 2024 at various locations in the UK.
