Warehouse storage solutions for heavy items

Getting the best out of your storage space is essential for any business and to maximise it, you must plan strategically and have the best storage infrastructure in place to suit your products. Forward thinking is also a must as your business adapts over time to incorporate changes in the industry. There are a number of flexible options available and this article will show you how to store heavy items in a warehouse and identify some of the best ways to optimise your storage space by utilising our high quality, heavy duty solutions for the best balance between accessibility and capacity.

Industrial Pallet Racking

Industrial pallet racking can be stored with both palletised goods and large, heavy individual items easily. They are strong and versatile and used widely throughout the storage industry, offering the maximum use of available spaces. Pallet racking is the most commonly used system for direct access to each pallet.

The pallet racks store pallets on several horizontal rows over multiple levels using forklift trucks to lift the goods onto the racks. The multiple levels allow for the height of your space to be used to maximum capacity by storing items vertically, reducing impact on floorspace. Pallet racking systems are a cost-effective and efficient way to store a large volume of items in a single location. Rack protectors and barriers are recommended to reduce the risk of damage from forklift trucks or other equipment.

Longspan shelving

Longspan shelving can be configured easily to incorporate a number of uses to maximise your storage space. A large variety of frames and beans are available with various widths and depths for increased flexibility. Bays with different dimensions (longspan and medium) can be combined within the same rack to better meet your requirements.

Cantilever

Cantilever is available in both single and double-sided configurations for the safe, organised storage of long, heavy goods on a single, central column which fits squarely against the wall of your storage space. Cantilever can be customised as your storage needs change because of its modular system.

Mezzanine floors

Mezzanine Floors are quick and easy to assemble and increase the surface space of any storage environment. Using a wide range of sizes and types of floors available, they are designed to maximise the use of the height of the storage space, doubling or even tripling the usable area. They can be reused as they can be dismounted with ease and their structure easily modified to fit changing business needs.

Multi-tier shelving

Multi-tier shelving is commonly installed in either intermediate walkways or floor-over systems or a combination of both and is constructed of metal frames and shelving units which can be reinforced to support heavy loads. The system can be configured to meet the full height of the storage space to maximise use and can accommodate a wide range of different products to increase efficiency. It is perfect for situations where a higher ceiling is present and makes economic use of floor storage space where it is lacking. When configured correctly, this system can effectively double the storage capacity available.

Safety first

Effective storage should not come at the sacrifice of high safety standards. The solutions above will optimise your space and help maintain a safe environment when used correctly. Heavier items should not be placed at the top of any shelving, instead positioned on bottom or middle shelves to help balance the weight load and ensure safety of staff when they are retrieving items. Avoid risk of tipping by storing long, heavy items sideways and not vertically to ensure stability. Clearly label heavy items for easy identification to help avoid mishandling and reduce the risk of related accidents. Utilise your space and chosen solutions to organise your items in such a way as to allow easy, unobstructed access and freedom of movement which will help keep risk of injury to a minimum.
