Konecranes recently showcased its cranes made with low carbon steel at the Green Steel World Conference in Essen, Germany, in June.
Traditional ways of steel production are both CO2 and energy intensive. Low carbon steel, also known as green steel, involves minimal carbon emissions with production powered by renewable energy sources and recycled materials added to the new steel.
Konecranes sources green steel from several steel makers in Europe and the USA. The company’s cranes are used to lift iron ore and scrap materials in the steel production industry.
There is a growing number of material handling equipment makers who are strongly committed to sustainability. Warehouse equipment manufacturers use tubular steel to fabricate picking trolleys, packing tables, shelving systems and other equipment. Their clients are the warehouse owners who are increasingly looking to source sustainable products.
Making equipment with net zero carbon emissions doesn’t happen overnight. Konecranes aims to achieve carbon neutral operations by 2030 and has already halved its carbon footprint compared to 2019. This has been achieved by continuous improvement in both transitioning to low carbon steel and powering their factories by renewable electricity. The company won a 2024 German Sustainability Award in the handling and lifting category.
As well as having sustainability goals, Konecrane is committed to making equipment that is durable and repairable so that it lasts a long time. Its business growth is based on innovative product design and excellent customer service principles that all material handling equipment manufacturers need to be successful.
