How AI makes warehouses more efficient

Artificial intelligence or AI is increasingly being used to improve the productivity and efficiency of warehouses.

Most small to medium businesses that operate warehouses do not have the budget for fully automated warehouses like Amazon’s where robots pick orders. Warehouses still rely on human workers to pick items off racks and take them to packing stations on heavy duty trolleys. AI has a supportive role in making the workforce more productive. It does this in several ways.

Sensors and smart shelving provide real-time inventory updates and gather data for inventory management software. AI helps predict fluctuations in demand for items and adjusts stock reorder levels. It can also plan delivery routes to make them shorter and more fuel efficient or reduce picking errors by making sure that all order times are correct.

Researchers at Harvard Business School asked warehouse workers about AI automation and found that 38% of them believed that automation makes their work quicker and more efficient. They also found that 42% of workers thought that automation increases safety. Sensors prevent machinery and vehicles from colliding with humans. Wearable AI technology monitors the health of employees. AI can also control heating and air-conditioning systems to maintain safe working temperatures

AI has a role to play in helping employers plan staff levels, especially in peak periods when extra temporary staff may be required. Staff scheduling software plans shifts and staff levels based on workloads. AI staff software monitors compliance with labour regulations including ones that cover paid holiday entitlement, break times between shifts and refreshment breaks.
