New report shows need for warehouses to upskill workers

A report by HR firm Randstad states that warehouse workers need to upskill to handle more complex roles.

Only 28% of workers say they have access to training in artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. The rate of upskilling has not kept pace with the digital technology transforming warehouses, according to the findings.

The Randsad report warns that, as e-commerce expands and becomes more complex, it could face a shortage of skilled workers. The report notes,

“The pace of digital transformation and automation is quicker than the sector’s workforce development. This is critical to address as our research reveals significant changes across roles in the sector.”

The report describes how warehouse workers are moving from manual picking and packing operators to supervisors of complex robotic systems. The worker who lifted boxes manually now operates advanced systems and requires the skill set to do this efficiently.

Van drivers are switching from simple navigation systems to following AI-optimised and planned delivery routes.

The report says that the key to attracting and maintaining skilled workers is more flexible working hours and conditions, rather than simply offering higher pay.

Many warehouses still rely on equipment from a heavy duty trolley supplier to provide picking trolleys for workers to use when picking order items by hand. Warehouse owners want to retain these workers by offering long-term careers and preparing them for new roles that equip them to handle the future use of automated and AI systems. Otherwise, the report warns, warehouse owners will face a scarcity of talented staff.
