The newly opened Liberty Steel Dalzell in Motherwell, Scotland is determined to gain its share of the steel market in the UK.
There is a high UK demand for quality steel for shipbuilding, pipes, wind turbines and material handling equipment. Most of this steel is supplied by European producers and Asian countries like South Korea. The Managing Director of Liberty Steel, Gordon McRae, is determined to reclaim a share of the steel market both in the UK and overseas.
Liberty Steel was closed for a while but has now reopened and aims to produce 120,000 tonnes of plate steel in 2018. McRae said:
“With the skill and determination of the workforce at Dalzell, we’ve begun to make real inroads into this market. We’re already reclaiming lost market share and we have big ambitions for future growth, not only at home but in key export markets also.”
He said that Scotland is at the forefront of the battle to supply more UK-made steel to British companies. The Scottish Finance Secretary, Derek Mackay, said that the Scottish Government is committed to the sustainable future of the steel industry in the nation, as well as its ability to compete in global markets.
Amazon and other online retailers are expanding in Scotland and the rest of the UK. This has created a high demand for warehouse racks and storage trolleys. A warehouse equipment manufacturer has a regular demand for tubular steel, and if Liberty Steel succeeds, more of this material will come from British steelworks.
