Report shows robots make warehouses safer

Warehouse workers have high injury rates, but according to a report from autonomous vehicle experts Cyngn, robots using artificial intelligence (AI) are helping to reduce accidents.

The robots achieve this by automating physically demanding tasks that cause musculoskeletal disorders and repetitive strain injuries.

Cyngn states that robots do not replace human workers, but allow humans to focus on less repetitive tasks that require complex decision-making and intrapersonal skills. Workers, assisted by robots, can still use aisle pickling trolleys and operate packing stations.

However, another recent report by Advanced Safety and Training has stated that robots create an additional safety risk, human and robot collisions. There have been several technologies developed to prevent collisions including proximity sensors, light curtains and geo-fencing that keep workers safe when working next to robots.

The Cyngn report says that as long as safety is a priority in the warehouse, automated systems make warehouses a safe working environment. However, no matter how robust safety protocols are, human error remains the cause of many accidents. To reduce these risks, warehouse workers need regular safety training on how to work safely alongside automated machinery and vehicles. Some companies are using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems that simulate hazardous conditions so that workers can practice safety procedures without danger.

The report concludes that:

“In 2025, the safety of warehouse workers hinges on the effective integration of modern technologies and proactive safety practices.”

The report’s authors stress that safety is not just a question of complying with regulations, but a financial and moral imperative.
