Increasing freight demos need for custom storage racks
11/05/2026 by Fenton Richardson
Standard racking systems are not suitable for the weight and size of many modern industrial materials as loads increase in weight but storage space remains the same. To address this, many warehouse operators are turning to custom-designed storage solutions, as reported in the Global Trade.
Standard racks struggle to accommodate unusual inventory, such as steel coils and long extensions that are too big or heavy for standard pallets. If operators try to fit them on traditional racks, the racks can sag or bow, which is a safety hazard, and if items are not sufficiently supported, they may fall or cause the racks to collapse.
Custom-engineered storage equipment is the solution, because no two facilities are the same. A good warehouse rack manufacturer can visit the workplace to assess storage requirements and design racks that precisely fit the individual needs of the warehouse. This may include wider racks to support large items and speciality racks that distribute weight evenly.
If the racks are manufactured in the UK, lead times between placing an order and installing the racks are shorter.
According to Emily Newton, a writer for Global Trade, the cost of custom racks is higher than for standard ones, but she says that the long-term return on investment is high. Custom racks can increase storage capacity and improve throughput efficiency. There is less downtime due to the need to repair broken storage equipment. Custom racks made with high-quality tubular steel will last a long time before needing to be replaced.
Custom-built systems provide the load capacity, durability and configuration flexibility that high-volume operators demand.
