In response to increasing customer demand, the online retail giant Amazon is in the process of opening a new fulfilment centre in Rugby, Warwickshire.
It is reported that around 400 permanent jobs will be created, including engineers, HR and IT specialists, managers, office staff and factory floor staff. The Midlands area is already home to the internet retailer’s warehouses in Daventry, Rugeley and Coalville, making the new Rugby facility the fourth and bringing employment levels in the region up to 2,900 people. The company aims to encourage more SMEs to sell on Amazon Marketplace.
With claims from Amazon that around £6.4bn has been invested in the United Kingdom since 2010, the retailer’s UK workforce will now stand at 24,000. This figure is set to increase further in 2018 with another three distribution centres planned for Bolton, Bristol and Coventry.
The investment by the company has been in areas such as head office facilities, research and development, and of course fulfilment centre infrastructure and logistics. State of the art warehouse equipment, including the latest in packing stations, sortation tables and bespoke picking trolleys, are the norm for the retailer, which already has 16 fulfilment centres situated throughout the UK.
