Stay organised with a warehouse equipment supplier

In a busy warehouse, you need the best equipment from your supplier that makes the process of picking and packing items organised, safe and quick.

Many warehouses, the same challenges

Whether you are a small business that handles a few orders a day, a manufacturer that needs quick access to components, or a large online seller such as Tesco or Next, the logistics challenge is the same – you need to locate items quickly and take them to a packing station or production line. This needs to be done with no errors, using a system that monitors the whole process from the initial order, through to reordering low-stock items and tracking deliveries.

To keep a warehouse organised, reliable equipment is required – the type that is not going to fail at any stage of the picking and packing process.

The right equipment for the job

A warehouse equipment supplier carries a variety of shelving, tables, trolleys and other equipment. They can help a warehouse operation match the best equipment for each individual job. Items stored on shelves come in many shapes and sizes, from small screws to large sofas. For small to medium items, standard rack shelving is fine, but for awkwardly shaped items like sofas and chairs, specialised trolleys and racks are required to safely store units.

Small items for multi-item orders benefit from tote boxes on trolleys. Sacks, as well as some boxes, are best moved with sack trolleys.

Some items, such as large panes of glass, need storage equipment that holds them safely. A-frames are suitable for glass or sheet metal. Long thin metal rods and similar sized items need to be stored safely on specialised equipment.

Safety is a primary concern, so workers should not be at risk by using inappropriate storage solutions. All staff need to be trained in the correct use of the equipment and the best way to manually lift goods on and off it.

Bespoke solutions

A good warehouse equipment supplier will visit the storage area to observe the current warehouse operation to see if the best equipment is being used.

Top suppliers also manufacturers the equipment and can modify any equipment. This could be a simple case of manufacturing equipment in custom sizes. Bespoke features can be added such as clipboard holders, integrated steps to reach high areas, “pigeon hole” organisers, and racks that fit unusually shaped or heavy items.

Packing stations are not easy to design to make them efficient. Packing tools and materials need to be easily reached, and a storage area for wrongly picked or damaged items may be required.

Preparation is key

Warehouse owners need to plan ahead for business expansion. If the marketing team succeeds in increasing business significantly, can the staff in the warehouse cope? The storage space may need to be extended. This can be done by making shelf units higher or building a mezzanine floor.

It is best to plan for expansion before business increases, and there’s no time like the present. Speak to us for advice on what we can do for you.
