At Steely Products, we powder coat tubular steel to make quality material handling and storage equipment. The powder coating finishing process coats the steel with finely ground particles of resin and pigment, which form a thin, durable film.
Here are six reasons why powder coating steel is beneficial.
1. Durability
We want our equipment to last a long time. Powder coating increases the durability of the steel and helps the equipment withstand heavy loads and collision damage. Expect equipment made by Steely to last a long time under heavy use.
Powder coating should last 20 years or longer, but it won’t last as long if the equipment is subject to strong outside sunlight for long periods. This shouldn’t be an issue in British weather, however.
2. Corrosion resistance
Moisture and humidity can make metal rust. A powder coating creates a barrier that helps prevent corrosion. If our equipment is used outside in the rain, the powder coating stops the moisture affecting the steel and causing rust.
3. Anti-chip, peeling and scratching
Some metal treatments are subject to chips and scratches, and they peel off after a while. Powder coating is strong and resistant to scratches and chips. It remains firmly bonded to the metal, so it won’t peel off.
4. Low maintenance
Powder-coated tubular steel requires little to no maintenance. As an anti-viral measure, regular cleaning is advised. Powder-coated steel is quick and easy to wipe down with a cloth and disinfectant.
5. Choice of colours
Most of Steely’s equipment is coated with blue powder, but other colour choices are available. The colour of the coating is not liable to fade, so it stays bright and clean looking.
6. Environmentally friendly
Powder coating does not harm the environment and uses no harmful solvents. During the coating process, no harmful vapours and fumes are emitted. There is minimal wastage in the powder coating process compared to other finishes. Powder-coated steel has no known health risks for end users.
Powder coating inhouse
Steely Products does not believe in outsourcing parts of the manufacturing process. We powder coat the tubular steel we use inhouse. Our workers are highly skilled in applying powder coating.
How does powder coating work?
Powder coating is a combination of polymer resin, pigments, levelling agents, flow monitors and other additives. All of these ingredients are heated so that they melt together. After the mixture has cooled, it’s ground into a powder.
The coating needs an electric charge for it stick to the metal. An electrostatic paint sprayer is used to apply the powder. This sprayer creates a positive electrical charge, and this chemically bonds the power to the steel. More than one layer can be applied if necessary
Unless a better coating solution is developed that is as cost effective and strong as powder coating, at Steely Products, we will continue to powder coat the tubular steel we use.
