What is a stillage?

30/04/2026 by Fenton Richardson

Extremely robust and mainly manufactured from strong metals like steel, a stillage is a multi-purpose container. Often cage-like in appearance, stillages are employed for storing goods but also handling and transporting them safely.

While similar in function to a pallet, stillages offer enhanced security for the materials they hold. This is because unlike pallets stillages have features to help enclose goods. Engineered with operating environments in mind, they are typically designed to stack so users can maximise available floor space in their warehouse or distribution centre.

A favoured storage and handling solution due to the way they can prevent damage and enhance operational efficiency, stillages are a versatile piece of apparatus that can equally store light, fragile items or heavy goods.

Key stillage features and types

Metal stillages are designed to be hardwearing, while ensuring goods stay secure whether they are stationary or on the move. They feature sides that may be solid metal or made of wire mesh to ensure inventory stays contained.

They have a stackable design that involves strong metal feet that distribute weight evenly. This ensures stillages can be stacked up safely, and vertical storage in warehouses and storerooms is maximised.

Custom stillages are possible to suit specific goods of different shapes, sizes and materials and to meet special applications or operating needs. For instance, collapsible cage stillages are easy to store when not in use, while wheeled stillages are ideal for swiftly transporting goods. Stillages can be modified for particular materials, like A-frame stillages employed to store and move glass.

What are the benefits stillages bring?

Stillages can improve onsite efficiency as they streamline and speed up unloading and loading times. They also prevent damage, especially in busy industrial and logistics environments. Vertical space in warehouses is not always maximised, but the stackable nature of stillages ensures companies make the most of their premises.

The sturdy and secure structure of stillages safeguard goods against damage during transportation. Reducing costs for operations and their durability means they can hold up for years, even when experiencing heavy use. When stationary, stillages also provide a defined space for goods on site, improving organisation.
