Plans to set up a new Lidl warehouse facility in Luton are going ahead.
The German discount retailer has said the new depot measures one million sq. ft., making it double the size of existing UK facilities. It is also hoped that around 1,000 new jobs will be created when the warehouse facility is completely up and running.
The retailer opened its first UK store in 1994, and presently has over 690 stores throughout the country, controlling around 5.1% of the UK market. This figure is up from two years ago, when Lidl had a 3.5 percent market share.
As a result of this fast growth, the grocery chain is investing £1.45bn in its UK stores and distribution centres. With five new stores due to open in London over the next couple of months, the support of a new warehouse and distribution centre is crucial. Plans also include the opening of three further warehouses this year in Doncaster, Peterborough and Bolton.
The new warehouse in Luton will be ideally placed to serve Lidl stores along the M25 corridor, as well as the five new stores at Walthamstow Central, Shepherds Bush, South Ruislip, Rosehill and Hornchurch. Supplying both food and non-food products, the new facility will have the latest warehouse management system, and a warehouse equipment supplier will have made sure all storage rack production was to the highest quality to cope with increasing consumer demand.
